Charcoal Portrait Drawings

Charcoal is a classic black-and-white medium, and Liang, a Vancouver sketch artist, draws it in the same photo-realistic style as all her work, with accurate likeness, fine detail and a full range of tones from soft greys to deep blacks. It's also the quickest option: most charcoal portraits are finished in about 7 days.

Charcoal is the natural choice for old photographs. If your photo is very old, tiny, or black and white, such as a grandparent's portrait from decades ago, a small charcoal sketch is the best fit: it suits the photo's tones, and a smaller size stays true to the limited detail in the original. Old photos fade over the years, but a drawing makes a keepsake that lasts.

Black-and-white charcoal sketch drawings are the best for black and white photos. They are also great for drawing animals with dark hair. For animals with light or white hair, an oil painting or color pastel drawing are recommended.
